For you Pooley :)

TOTTENHAM are ready to launch a £9million bid for former Birmingham striker Christian Benitez.

Spurs chiefs have opened talks for the Ecuadorian international, 27, who has topped the scoring charts in the Mexican top flight for the last three seasons.

Benitez smashed 30 goals this term to lead Club America to the title.

Club America president Ricardo Pelaez said: “There could be a good offer for Christian from Tottenham.

“I’ve spoken with him and he wants to return to Europe. We won’t clip his wings if we get an offer that suits us.

“Of course there are bids for him — he has been the league’s top scorer three times after all.

“He is a great guy and a magnificent player. He is under contract but we’ll look to see what is the best option.”

It was on the radio this morning that AVB is after Cristian Benitez.

He has been a goal machine all his career, apart from when he played under McInept - funny that.

Loved his short stay at Blues.

It was unfortunate for him and us that while he was here that McLeish was in charge. Any striker that plays under Mcleish is on a hiding to nothing.

Yea I liked the little fella he was a tricky customer and a defenders nightmare.

He was a tricky customer, I liked him. Always caused the defence a load of problems, but rarely the goalkeeper unfortunately. If he'd have had say a fit Forssell up front with him instead of the cumbersome Jerome, that would have been good to see.

cracking, let him come over to spurs and hit powder puff shots straight at keepers, miss open nets and fall over his feet trying to take on 10 players by himself.

If he comes and joins spurs I can enjoy laughing AT him and them each week on motd **thumbup

A player whose unselfishness helped Cameron Jerome find the space and opportunities to score double figures in the Premier League.

Imagine how many Bale could score with someone creating that sort of space for him. Good lord.

Some might point out that it's a team game, based around building partnerships and relationships with your colleagues.

I genuinely have no idea how you can argue that a striker being 'inept' will somehow make the other one perform to a standard he has never reached at any other point in his career.

What I find funny are the quotes, the Daily Mail, got from Alex McLeish about Chucho.

Daily Mail

And Alex McLeish believes Benitez would have blossomed into a forward of real pedigree had his stay in the Premier League been extended beyond one season.

The Scot, who was the striker's boss when the pair were together at Birmingham City four years ago, says that while three goals was not a great return, the Ecuadorian's overall impact was far greater.

He told Sportsmail: 'I would dispute anyone's claims that wee 'Chucho' was a flop for me at Birmingham.

'He might only have scored three - but he created a lot more. Cameron Jerome and Lee Bowyer were two players who certainly benefited when he was around.

'I would have kept him at the end of the season but we had designs on other established strikers and the club decided the fee was too high.

'I believe he would have got better and better had he stayed in English football.'

So creative, you w*****, you benched him so often, good one.

Benitez would be brilliant for a side like Spurs. With top quality players around him, he'd definitely shine and I think he does deserve another chance at this level. As most have said, McLeish isn't the best manager to work under as a centre forward!

If you have talented players with a bit of flair, then you play to their strong points ,not against them,Mcleish never ever got the best out of the players he had at the time,It was crying out for a change of style but Mcleish in all his time never changed his way of playing,So it begs the question,Why buy thoses players in the first place.
Brian Clough used always say,Buy a player and play to his best strengths,It seemed to work for him.

Though if you're talking about playing to players' strengths, McLeish did go 4-4-2 on that 15 game unbeaten streak. Benitez through the centre with Jerome worked a treat.

That was until he decided 4-5-1 was the better option and we had relegation form for the remaining half of the season.

Everyone liked benitez even alex if you look at his quotes but the benitez deal didnt work simply because.
1 he couldnt score goals during our purple patch he only got two.
2. his training was woefull compared to others(alledgedly)
3. His proposed fee was MILES & MILES too high for what he brought us, hope he goes to spurs & that it works out..but i will be surprised if he does De Foe about ten times better player and AVB doesnt always start him!

I loved him and was disappointed to see him go despite understanding the factors you highlight for not signing him.

What I find surprising is the fee they are demanding which indicates he must be half decent. Personally I can't see this one happening Levi is no mug when it comes to business . The price would have to drop!

He's also on ridiculous money... hence why he's gone there.

Mauro Zarate joined us on loan from a Qatari side... Al-Sadd and he is one of the best footballers this club has ever had on its books.

So him going there means nothing but him having a hefty wage packet..
